Connection Classes

At Murphy Middle School, Connections is where your day expands a bit—where you step into something different and start figuring out what you actually enjoy. You’ll still have strong academic classes, but this is where you might pick up an instrument, build something, compete, or discover an interest you didn’t know you had.
It’s also where a lot of the real “middle school experience” takes shape. You’ll meet new people, work alongside classmates you don’t have in your core classes, and start to feel like you belong here. Over time, Connections helps you build confidence, develop new skills, and begin to answer a bigger question: "what kind of learner—and person—do I want to be?" We take that seriously. Connections isn’t just something you go to; it’s something that helps you find your place.

AgSTEM/Engineering

Band

Band at Murphy Middle is a place where students will learn to create, perform, and respond to music while learning to play an instrument. Our band features instruments from the woodwind, brass, and percussion families.

We will play at least two concerts per year in December and May. 7th and 8th grade students will have additional opportunities to perform individually and in smaller groups such as Basketball Band and Jazz Band.

Chorus

Murphy Middle School Chorus is a welcoming and exciting place where students learn the fundamentals of reading music and developing their singing voices. Throughout the year, we explore a wide variety of musical repertoire, building skills and confidence along the way. Chorus is also a space to connect with others and form friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have opportunities to grow beyond the classroom by participating in special events such as Honor Chorus and Large Group Performance Evaluations. We can’t wait to sing with you!

Computer Science

At Murphy Middle School, our 6th-8th graders in Computer Science courses prepare students for future careers by building essential employability skills and computational thinking. Students gain hands-on experience in foundational programming, cybersecurity, digital ethics, and interactive web and game design. By creating, testing, and debugging their own projects, students develop the practical problem-solving skills needed to thrive in today's digital world.

Health

Health Education helps students understand how to take care of their mind, body, and relationships during the important middle school years. Through engaging discussions and real-life scenarios, students learn how to make smart choices, manage challenges, and build healthy habits that support their overall well-being. This class empowers students with the knowledge and confidence to take charge of their health now and in the future.

Music Technology

Orchestra

Students in the Murphy Middle Orchestra will learn how to play one of the four string instruments in the symphony orchestra: violin, viola, cello, or bass. We’ll start at the very beginning, so don’t worry if you are new to music. You will be playing songs like a professional before our first concert in December! We’ll learn music fundamentals like note reading and rhythm and put it all together as we perfect our playing skills.

You’ll love playing music with friends and performing for family as you showcase your skills and represent Murphy at Honor Orchestra, Chamber Fest, concerts, and community events.

Physical Education

Physical Education is an active, high-energy class where students build skills, fitness, and confidence through movement. Students participate in a variety of games, activities, and challenges that help them stay active, work with others, and discover new ways to enjoy physical activity. PE encourages students to challenge themselves, have fun, and develop lifelong habits of staying active.

Spanish

Students at Murphy Middle School have the opportunity to study the Spanish language.

The 6th-grade Spanish course is an introductory, one semester class focuses on language, customs, cultures, and geography for the areas where the language is spoken. Students learn practical vocabulary through a variety of written and oral activities.

At the end of 6th grade, students can apply for the yearlong Spanish 1 course that is taken in both 7th and 8th grade . Upon successful completion of the Spanish 1 program (both years), students will earn on Carnegie unit or high school credit.
